LIFE-LONG LEARNER AND CREATOR

Hello!

This is where I am supposed to tell you that I am a photographer or a teacher or an artist or a student, etc. The truth is that I am all of those things, but for a good portion of my life I have gone by the name of ‘mom’ to four precious people. I have had the privilege of loving them and watching them grow and mature into the most unique and talented individuals. Their story became mine, and their raising became my raising into the person that I am today.

When I was young my parents discovered that I had artistic talent, and they chose to cultivate it by enrolling me in schools that had amazing art departments. I attended a middle magnet school with a fantastic art curriculum. From there I was accepted into an arts-focused high school, where I graduated as valedictorian. That success earned me a full scholarship to Tyler School of Art (a part of Temple University), where I majored in Photography with a concentration in Art Education and graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a K-12 teacher’s certificate.

For the student teaching portion of my senior year, I had the opportunity to teach art for the K-12 students in the town in Maine where I currently reside. The whole experience was fantastic, but the best part was teaching at the elementary school that didn’t have an art teacher. I had an entire school that was thrilled to have me, and I was able to develop my own schedule and curricula under the supervision of the district’s high school art teacher.

After graduating I went on to teach private art lessons, as well as small group lessons for various co-operative learning institutions. At the same time, I raised and facilitated the education of my own brood, I taught everything from studio art to darkroom photography, and from art appreciation to watercolor clubs. Through it all, I never tired of opening the world of art to my students.

The world changed while I was raising my family, and so did technology. While my own film camera sat on the shelf, the photography world went digital. I decided it was time to take the plunge into digital photography and so I picked up an SLR camera and enrolled in college classes to update my skills. As I pack my camera bag and art supplies for the next part of my life’s journey, I took all that I learned before as well as all I have learned over the past twenty plus years with me as I moved forward. I joined the digital graphic design program at the local community college and found an amazing and supportive learning community. In the process I added an AAS in Digital Graphic Design as an addendum to my BFA that I view as an extension of my previously earned degree.

As I write this additional portion of my journey for this updated web page, I have not only added to my skills and experience with additional courses, but for the past five years I have been instructing at the same institution that allowed me to explore my creativity in new ways and with new media and art forms. It continues to be a wonderful experience as I once again have an opportunity to open the world of art to my students.

Currently, I am working my way through a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration which nestles nicely with my life-long interest in education and creativity.

Welcome to a selection of my artworks and creative ventures. Enjoy!
